about

Bryce is the 2nd track on our recently released EP Gnu To You. The song is a tribute to a friend of Steve’s who was beloved by many in Vankleek Hill, where A\V calls home. The song has been in our repertoire for many, many years but rarely gets played live; usually in late winter.

Steve says:

“Cancer has taken many people very close to me; the list grows longer every year it seems. Bryce wasn’t the first, but he was the youngest and the closest in age to me. His battle started in his teens and after battling it valiantly for many years, it took him down.

His Mom asked us if we would write a song to play at his funeral, but we couldn’t do it, our grief was too sharp. It always bothered me though, that we let his mom down on his funeral day. It took a few years, but finally this song came out. We don’t play it very often, I think because it is still painful to think about, but I feel better after every time we play it. Bryce, I still miss you.

Musically speaking, this is a stripped down rock and roll song with an open chord AC/DC feel to it. It’s a story telling song, so it was important to not let music interfere with the parable”

Gary says:

“We play this song so infrequently that it’s possible many people who are familiar with the band have never heard it. I think we’ve only played it live once since we recorded it. The hand claps in the chorus were producer Ian Blurton’s idea. He physically ran into where we were doing the background vocals and clapped VERY loudly at that part during playback, with this crazed look in his eyes. We were so scared after that, we did it for him until our hands wanted to fall off.”

Kevin says: “Lousy (s)March weather sucks.”
